If they don't get it, how can you?

NOTE:  I thought this fact was hilarious when I stumbled across it last night so as I do with all most of my posts I googled researched it.

I found tons of images of the artwork (which is not a painting by the way, it's a paper-cut) but here’s the kicker: They had images of it both upside down and right side up but not ONE source I found indicated which was the correct way!

Being the crafty gal that I am I shook my fist at the sky and yelled "HA! You cannot thwart me!" and I promptly went to the website of the Museum of Modern Art.  All of the sources I could find indicated that they are still the proud owners of this piece and many more by Matisse.  Well, the piece is not even listed as part of their collection and there are no images of it anywhere on the site.  It's like they're pretending it never happened because if people think about it long enough they just might realize most modern art is incomprehensible, even to the people that are supposed to know better… but I digress.

In closing, the point of my babbling is this...I have absolutely NO IDEA if my poorly drawn representation of this piece is right side up or not.  If you know or if you find out which way is correct I would love for you contact me because I am all kinds of curious.

UPDATE:  So my fabulous and arty friend John informed me on Facebook that "The boat" should supposedly be placed with the more detailed half on top, as the lower half is supposed to be the distorted reflection of the boat in the water. He was already dead when they made the supposed mistake, so I guess no one can really know for sure.  Apparently a woman, who was a stockbroker, informed the museum that the painting was upside down and basically, they just took her word for it. Experts!  Visit http://theeasel.tumblr.com/ for the story.
